Residents should bring their out-dated or unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medicines in the original container, although personal information may be marked out. Volunteers will dispose of both the medicine and the containers, protecting patient confidentiality. This is a free, drive-through, drop off service.
The Middleton site was added last June. At that time more than 1,435 Dane County residents brought 3,222 pounds of unwanted medication, doubling previous totals. “These events demonstrate the continuing need for a way to get rid of medicines. It’s not safe to keep unneeded medicines in the home and it’s not good for the environment to flush them down the toilet or put them in the landfills either,” says Kendra Jacobsen, Executive Director of the Madison Patient Safety Collaborative, the event sponsor. “MedDrop gives people the best solution given the current laws and regulations.”
MedDrop will accept:
- Prescription medicine (pills, liquids and creams)
- Over the counter medicine (pills, liquids and creams)
- Medications for pets
- Vitamins
- Nebulizer solution
- Inhalers
Illegal drugs will also be taken, no questions asked. They will be turned over to authorities for immediate disposal.
MedDrop will not accept:
- Used needles/sharps
- Thermometers
- IV Bags
- Oxygen Tanks
- Nebulizer machines
Participants will be asked a few short questions including their zip code. Law enforcement officers from the Dane County Narcotics and Gang Task Force will be on site to make sure controlled substances are handled properly.
