Grant Work = Great Work
Meriter Foundation Announces $200,000 in Grants for 2009.
The Meriter Foundation board of directors recently approved more than $200,000 in grants supporting medical research and education. Meriter Hospital physicians and staff proposed a variety of projects designed to increase safety, improve outcomes and reduce costs for Meriter patients and families.
The approved research and education grants range from $30,000 to $65,000 and include:
- Overcoming Barriers to Good Health in the Medically Underserved
Cate Ranheim, MD, Meriter Medical Group A study to identify and address common barriers to routine medical care for low-income and homeless patients admitted to Meriter's Emergency Department. Findings will offer guidance in proactive primary care delivery strategies for low-income and homeless patients.
- Core Equipment for Neonatal Simulation Laboratory
De-Ann Pillers, MD, PhD, UW/Meriter Neonatal Center The purchase of equipment for Meriter's new, state-of-the-art neonatal simulation center. A neonatal patient simulator will allow physicians, nurses and allied health care professionals to manage unpredictable medical emergencies through training experiences that pose no risk to human life.
- Adolescents' Reactions to Psychiatric Hospitalization
Tally Moses, PhD, UW-Madison School of Social Work A research study evaluating the stigmatizing effects of short-term, in-patient hospitalization from the perspective of children admitted to the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Hospital. Results will offer strategies to improve patient outcomes and lower the risk of re-hospitalization.
- Factors Associated with the Use of Appropriate Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis
Kyle Utecht, PharmD, Meriter Hospital This study examines the multiple characteristics that influence a physician's decision to provide an appropriate venous thromboembolism prophylaxis. The analysis will guide quality improvement programs at Meriter.
